Christmas | Trees and what to put on them

If you can't beat 'em, join 'em. That's the approach I'm taking to Christmas 2017. Is it just me or has everyone gone early? Normally I am staunch in my insistence that Christmas cannot begin until my beginning-of-December birthday has been and gone, but it feels churlish this year. From Christmas adverts on the telly to songs in shops, there's no getting away from it - Christmas has landed.

My kids even watched Arthur Christmas yesterday while the fire roared in the hearth and we drank whisky from the crystal glasses (thank you Haig Club! If it's good enough for David Beckham...). The only thing missing? The tree, of course.

This must be rectified as soon as possible, and so we are taking delivery of a 7 foot evergreen beauty next week thanks to Bristol Christmas tree purveyors, Ali and Joe. These guys live and breathe Christmas (and have a year-round pine-fresh scent about them, or so I hope).

I'm hoping for an Elf-style ceiling-skimming tree as these guys sell locally sourced, non-drop Nordmann Fir trees up to 10 feet tall. As well as being discerning tree selectors, they embody the season with their Christmas jumpers (Ali owns 18 of them!), free mince pies and generally jolly demeanours.

If you are local to Bristol then give Ali and Joe a go this year - they PROMISE quality Christmas trees, stands and mistletoe - and you can either order for home delivery or find them at various pop-up locations around the Bristol and Bath including:

Would you like free delivery on any Christmas tree? Course you would (you'd be saving £10). Just use code OPFREEDEL when checking out at - it's valid on orders until 5 December 2017 but you can select delivery after that date.

OR get £5 off your tree! Anyone who mentions Oyster & Pearl at one of Ali and Joe's sales will snag the discount - more money for mince pies.

And then there's the question of what to put on the tree... What Christmas tree decorations are the ones for us this year? I had a whimsical notion that whatever normally goes in trees would make excellent decorations, and so there are flocked pine cones, glittered feathers and a brood of rather too realistic birds just waiting to adorn those deep green needled branches (anyone else humming 'A Partridge in a Pear Tree'?).

I will keep an eye, however, as these birdies have caught the eye of my killer kittens and I foresee tree-scaling. Perhaps I will have to return to my own advice for decorating Christmas trees with a toddler in the house.

But I do love a rummage in the decorations box to find the old favourites from previous years. The blending of old and new, mine and his, comes together in a big old nostalgia mash up that somehow works.

And so, there it is. I now proclaim Christmas 2017 OPEN FOR BUSINESS!

Are you ready for it? Perhaps you went even earlier than I have? Let me know what adorns your tree - I'd love to see.
