Christmas | Paddington and the Christmas Visitor

http://www.oysterandpearl.co.uk/2017/12/christmas-paddington-and-christmas.html

When my brother and I were kids, we had a much loved and rather battered old Paddington bear. His wellies kept falling off and he was definitely sticky from the marmalade sandwiches we'd make for him (complete with 'nom nom' pretend eating noises), but he was very much loved. Paddington is a bona fide classic whose recent resurgence in popularity is thanks to that brilliant Wes Anderson-esque film from 2014.

Now, Paddington 2 has hit the cinemas and is Lauren Laverne's film of the year, no less. And with it, Marks & Spencer has brought out an array of brilliant (or should that be bear-illiant) Paddington goodies for Christmas. The furry Peruvian character even features in the M&S Christmas advert this year - a festive, family focused tale, telling the story of how everyone’s favourite bear unknowingly saves Christmas for his friends and neighbours.

Yesterday, we were invited up to our local Marks & Spencer store for a very special reading of a very special book. Paddington and the Christmas Visitor (the story of the advert) is now available as a storybook (£3) with proceeds going to the NSPCC - such a deserving charity, especially at this time of year. So we gathered up the kids, who were giddy with excitement, and went to meet the bear.

M&S have done a brilliant job with Paddington and we entered a wintry world of magic hidden within the kidswear department. A giant red sleigh sat at the centre, waiting for a VIB (Very Important Bear) to arrive. We took the opportunity for a picture or two, with Paddington's sweet little face peering back at us on the backdrop.

As well as the sleigh, board games and colouring sheets were laid out for the kids to play with, plus face painting and the best array of bear-related snacks including Marmalade Muffins and Snowy Yule Log. I loved spotting the duffle coats and those iconic red wellies, too!

But then, he arrived! Paddington Bear himself. It was so sweet to watch the kids flocking over to greet him. He high-fived and waved, making his way to the sleigh where the storytelling began.

A sea of little faces sat spellbound by the festive story and enchanted by the presence of such a famous character. It was so sweet to see.

Once the story ended, PB stuck around for photos and more excited children wanting to meet their hero. Plus, there were plenty of snacks to enjoy while perusing the merchandise.

The lovely staff at M&S Cribbs Causeway gave us a box of Paddington goodies to take home, including tree decorations, a pair of slippers, plenty of Paddington chocolate treats, enamel cufflinks, socks and (my favourite) Paddington marmalade.

It really was an afternoon to remember. A huge thank you, Marks and Spencer, for inviting us to experience some enchanting Christmas magic.
